The Skin Renewal/Keratinization Process

The skin is made up of a protein called Keratin. On a daily basis dead skin cells are shed by the epidermis in a process called the Keratinization Process (also known as the skin-renewal process). Just like your nails and hair grow, so does your skin.

The Keratinization Process takes approximately 28 days. However, as you mature, the process slows down and takes longer to complete. When the Keratinization Process begins to slow down, the skin has a tendency to hold on to more dead skin cells, rendering the skin dull and lifeless. In youth, Collagen and Elastin Fibers, keep skin plump and free from wrinkles. These fibers lie in the dermis to keep the skin resilient and wrinkle-free. They also assist the skin with water retention.
