What is Oily Skin?

Oily skin is skin that over produces oil. It is characterized by enlarged pores, thick skin (like that of an orange or a lemon) and has a slick, greasy appearance. This skin type sometimes tends to suffer from chronic acneic breakouts. There are many variables within this category. Everyone who is oily may not necessarily suffer from acne, there has to either be a genetic predisposition for this condition, the misusage of product or since acne can be stress induced , stress can cause acne. My philosophy is that we should always try to normalize the skin. Oil is good for the skin when it is in balance. It helps to protect the skin from dehydration and aids in maintaining the protective barrier function.

Assessment of the Oily Skin Type

Many times I will find that my oily-skin clients will use alcohol in an effort to get rid of excess oil on the skin. This is very damaging because the skin will attempt to restore balance by producing more oil. The skin is now oily and dehydrated (skin lacks water and feels dry to the touch).

When I hear an oily-skin client say that they are oily, but their skin feels dry, it indicates to me that alcohol, soap or overly astringent products have been used. When using the aforementioned products, you remove the oil and you also remove the water in the skin.  It is then left severely imbalanced. The client has now made a bad situation worse! The Objective should never be to take the skin from one end of the spectrum to the other. If you have oily skin you don’t want to create dry skin. You want to establish a normal-balanced skin. It is absolutely imperative to be on a good skin care regimen.

If your skin is excessively oily , and if you are suffering from excessive breakouts, you should try the foaming cucumber cleanser. This cleanser is unique because it is gentle, PH-Balanced and won’t strip the skin. The deep pore cleansing lotion cleanser is good if you skin is normal to oily and your skin is dehydrated. The revitalizing toner is good especially  if you are prone to acne. The oil blotting hydrating lotion or the aloe active cream moisturizers are great. The firming eye cream and the oatmeal buffing cream are great additions to any regimen. If you are suffering from acne breakouts, the glycolic serum is an excellent product to spot treat with. It can be used all over if you are extremely oily, with breakouts and you're not overly sensitive.
