What Are Enzymes?
Enzymes are proteins secreted by cells that act as a catalyst to induce chemical changes in other substances without undergoing change themselves. All living organisms depend on enzymes, so all living organisms may be considered sources of enzymes.
There are three types of enzymes: food enzymes, digestive enzymes and metabolic enzymes.
Food enzymes: are contained in raw food, they are beneficial because they aid with the digestive process taking the stress off of the pancreas. Eg. of raw foods would be fresh fruit and vegetables and raw nuts.
Metabolic enzymes are your body's construction workers. They take all of the nutrients that are absorbed into the body and put them to work in their respective places. Enzymes are the reason why our heart beats, our blood circulates and our livers work etc.. they are responsible for thousands of biochemical reactions that are taking place in our body's 24/7.
Digestive enzymes: are produced by the pancreas, they digest fats, carbohydrates and protein.. there is a theory called the law of adaptive secretion: this law says that whatever is being emptied out of the stomach into the first part of the small intestines is assessed by sensors in the body, and a message is sent to the pancreas letting it know which enzymes should be secreted. Many times because of a poor diet of cooked processed food, the pancreas becomes overtaxed, and exhausted. The person may begin to suffer from indigestion because of a poor enzyme supply.
Many times when patients go to the Doctor complaining about indigestion, they are usually diagnosed with acid reflux. Acid reflux is a condition where the stomach acid actually comes up into the esophagus causes a burning fiery sensation. Indigestion is when you are not able to digest for food because of low stomach acid and an overtaxed pancreas. Indigestion many times is characterized as a full tight feeling in the chest area, and you may feel a need to pat yourself on the chest to relieve trapped gas. Poor digestion will cause the food that you have eaten to putrefy in your stomach, gases are released from the undigested food into the esophagus giving you that uncomfortable feeling of tightness in the chest.
As we mature, our gastric juices and enzyme levels decrease as a result of poor diet and the aging process. This is where the benefits of digestive enzymes come in. Plant enzymes are usually obtained by grinding plant material and extracting the vegetable material to separate the soluble protein from the insoluble matter. Animal enzymes are similarly obtained.
Enzymes take the stress off of the pancreas and enhance digestion and health. You can only build health based on what you digest. If you are eating, but not digesting your food, then you could very well be suffering from malnutrition.
When I entered into the natural health field, I would attend conferences and the talk was always about enzyme therapy. I said to myself, I need to find out the health benefits of enzymes. AS a part of my discourse of study, I took a class on the benefits of enzymes, when I walked into the class the morning, I noticed a bowl of oatmeal in a glass bowl on the instructor's desk. He came into the class, with a bottle of plant enzymes and opened up a capsule, and sprinkled it over the oatmeal. That oatmeal that was cold hand hard, had liquefied. I was sold... The purpose of enzymes in digestion is to convert meals into molecules, usable nutrients. I had no intentions of carrying enzymes as a part of my line of supplements, but I was completely convinced of it's benefits; and felt they would benefit me as well as my clients.
If you go the supplements page, you will find three Enzyme formulas:
#28 For inflammation, blood cleansing, viruses and protein digestion.
#30 Gentle full spectrum digestion enzyme. Can be used on children and babies with colicky conditions and poor digestion.
# 32 Full spectrum adult enzyme formula. Formulated to support digestion and take the stress off of the pancreas.
